Choosing the Right Shotgun Shells
Share
When it comes to shotgun sports, one size does not fit all. The type of shell you choose can make a big difference in your performance—whether you’re busting clays on the skeet field, breaking long-range targets in sporting clays, or shooting trap competitively. At Iron City Shooting Sports, we stock a wide range of ammunition so you can match your shells to the sport you love most.
Trap Shooting – Consistency is Key
Trap targets are launched away from the shooter at varying angles, so you need a shell that delivers consistent patterns and speed.
- What to use: 1 oz. or 1 1/8 oz. loads of #7.5 or #8 shot.
- Why: These provide a solid balance of pellet count and energy to break clay targets at the 16-yard line and beyond. A little extra velocity can also help with handicap trap when shooting further back.
Skeet Shooting – Wide Patterns for Close Shots
Skeet is all about fast, close-range crossing targets. You’ll need shells that spread quickly to increase your margin for error.
- What to use: 7/8 oz. or 1 oz. loads of #9 shot.
- Why: The smaller pellets and lighter loads give you dense patterns at short ranges without excessive recoil. This helps keep you smooth and consistent as targets come in rapid succession.
Sporting Clays – Versatility Matters
Often called “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays challenge shooters with a mix of target distances, speeds, and angles. No two stations are the same, so your ammo has to be adaptable.
- What to use: A mix of #7.5, #8, and #9 shot loads. Many shooters carry a variety.
- Why: Lighter #9 shot is great for close-range, rabbit, or chandelle targets, while #7.5 provides the pellet energy you need for distant crossers. Sporting clays often requires adjusting your ammo to the target presentation.
Hunting vs. Target Loads – Know the Difference
It’s also important to distinguish between target loads (like Winchester AA, Federal Top Gun, and Remington STS) and hunting loads. Target loads are designed specifically for clay shooting with optimized velocity, recoil, and patterning. Hunting shells are heavier, faster, and often use larger shot sizes to bring down birds or game.
